Beyond Dance – Cosmogony (Switzerland)

Type: Contemporary Dance
Duration: 32 minutes
By: Gilles Jobin
**Arab World Premiere

This year, D-CAF will present two films and a live-streamed performance under the title Beyond DanceBeyond Dance seeks to push the boundaries of dance, video art, and their most creative intersections, unveiling the question: beyond entertainment and pleasure, what does dance offer to its practitioners and audiences? How does dance intersect with new and innovative artforms of the digital age? How can it provide an avenue for the empowerment of marginalized communities? The screenings will be followed by a Q&A with the artists, during which audiences can address all of the above questions, all the while enjoying refreshments at the Tahrir Cultural Center’s main garden.

A groundbreaking example of how performance pieces can be brought to a worldwide audience in spite of international travel restrictions. Created by the Swiss Compagnie Gilles Jobin, this performance features three dancers: Susana Panades Diaz, Jozsef Trefeli and Rudi Van Der Merwe. The performers are motion-captured live at the company’s studio in Geneva and screened in real time, 7000 miles away at The Egyptian in Park City and, simultaneously, live-screened online at the New Frontier Spaceship Cinema for a global audience. The dancers’ movements are captured in Geneva, sliced up into digital ‘bits,’ and sent instantaneously through cyberspace to appear as avatars. The dancers act as the puppeteers of their own bodies, animating their avatars in real time and composing the cosmogony of a world in suspension. The moving bodies of the dancers break free from the laws of physics to the droning sounds of Swiss band Tar Pond, inviting viewers on a mesmerizing journey beyond reality.
