The Care Agreement explores the relationship between the five elements through what Ancient Chinese practices call the controlling and nourishing cycles. In the controlling cycle, wood drains earth, earth absorbs water, water puts out fire, fire melts metal, and metal cuts wood. In the nourishing cycle, wood feeds fire, fire nourishes earth, earth creates metal, metal enriches water, and water renews wood.
These cycles remind us of balance and the push and pull between destruction and regeneration, mirrored in the body. To care is to attend to body, soul, and spirit, extend empathy to others, and remain aware of everything—from the ground beneath our feet to the sky above. The Care Agreement responds to the culture of silence embedded in today’s political and social reality. It calls us to return to the essence of our shared humanity: care.
