In this edition of Mazg for Culture and Arts’ annual comic exhibition, we ask “where do dreams go?”. Not the sleeping kind, but our waking ones; the ones we daydream of, the hopes and plans that keep us preoccupied, that we try for so long to bring them to life. Dreams of a trip around the world, of endless adventure, or wedding preparations and building a family, travelling abroad to study, or waiting for Eid to buy that coveted toy with gift money.
Simple dreams we all have can suddenly be disrupted by a painful reality that can’t be planned for, like wars and the horrors they bring–destruction, displacement and loss–that become our only reality. This reality is often bigger and harsher than any dream, no matter how simple. Yet, we cling onto our dreams like a lifeline, giving them centre stage while pushing reality to the margin. Every dreamer, despite their struggles, is the hero of their own story, possessing the power to realise both the simplest dreams and the most complex, like survival.
Where do dreams go? brings together the works of 30 artists following an open call launched in August.
أين تذهب الأحلام؟ سؤال نطرحه في هذه النسخة من مصنع الكوميكس السنوي الذي تنظمه مزج للثقافة والفنون.
ليست أحلام النوم المعتادة، لكن أحلام اليقظة التي تلاحقنا خلال اليوم، الآمال والخطط التي تبقينا منشغلين، ونطمح لسنوات أن نجعلها حقيقة.
أحلام للسفر حول العالم.. المغامرات التي لا تنتهي.. تحضيرات لحفل زفاف وتكوين أسرة.. السفر للخارج للدراسة.. انتظار العيد لشراء لعبة بعد الحصول على العيدية.
الأحلام البسيطة التي نمتلكها جميعـًا يمكن أن تتأثر بواقع مؤلم لا قِبل لنا به، مثل الحروب وما يتبعها من رعب وتدمير ونزوح وفقد، حتى تصبح هذه المشاعر والتجسيدات واقعنا الأوحد.
هذا الواقع أحيانـًا يصير أكبر وأقسى من أي أحلام لدينا، بغض النظر عن مدى بساطتها، إلا أننا نتعلق بهذه الأحلام كأنها أنبوب تنفس، فنجعلها في المركز ونلقي بالواقع في الهامش.
كل حالم وحالمة رغم معاناتهم، هم أبطال حكاياتهم. ولديهم القدرة على إدراك أبسط وأعقد الأحلام، مثل النجاة.
أين تذهب الأحلام يجمع أعمال أكثر من ٣٠ فنانة وفنان بعد دعوة أُطلقت في أغسطس الماضي.
