Joss Turnbull is a German percussionist, improviser, and composer known for his inventive approach to Middle Eastern hand drums and electronics. Trained at the Mannheim University of Music, Turnbull deepened his craft with research trips across Syria, Lebanon, and Istanbul, and through intensive study with Iranian masters Mohammad Reza Mortazavi and Madjid Khaladj. His work explores the tombak, mazhar, and riqq—transforming their voices through preparation, live-sampling, and electronic processing. Performing widely as a soloist and with ensembles such as the Trickster Orchestra (ECM) and Ensemble Asil. His debut Isturnbull (2013) and recent solo album Turmoil (2025) highlight his radical artistry, honored by awards including the Kathrin-Preis for young jazz improvisers.
