In the harshest and most difficult environments, living beings develop the ability to adapt, evolving and adjusting their defences to survive as long as possible. Among them is the cactus, which grows in the desert wrapped in a layer of thorns, thriving in an arid and hostile land. The cactus is not just a plant; it is a symbol of endurance and the power to adapt to adversity.
“Can we, like the cactus, inspire stories about our own persistence in the face of life’s challenges?”
In this edition of Mazg’s annual exhibition, Artistic Director Migo, invited comic artists from across the Arab region and the diaspora to create stories inspired by the theme of adaptation—whether rooted in real experiences or imagined worlds. These could be tales of individuals overcoming harsh conditions, communities rebuilding after disaster, or even mythical beings adapting to their environments. The artists were encouraged to reflect on humanity’s ability to cope with the social, economic, and political shifts that make life increasingly complex. Despite living in an age of advancement and infinite choices, reality sometimes imposes what we cannot control—wars, famines, and crises that turn every day and every detail into a challenge.
