
Nacera Belaza was born near Médéa in Algeria and has lived in France since the age of five. She is a self-taught dancer, who after studying modern literature, she founded her own company in 1989. Her work explores the complexity of her dual cultural background and how movement confronts “the deafening din of our lives” with patience, discipline, and simplicity. In 2015, she was named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and Officier in 2024. Her piece Le Cri received the Prix de la Révélation in 2008, and in 2017 the Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques awarded her the Choreographer’s Prize. Her work is regularly performed internationally and she has established a cooperative in Algeria to maintain strong artistic ties with her country of origin.
