Light – ضَوْء

Light is a theatrical performance that presents a storyteller who shares the tale of Layla–trapped in a dark library, hiding from the sunlight. Layla, in turn, tells stories to her audience of chairs, tables, and windows, in an attempt to survive. 

The storyteller becomes increasingly immersed in Layla’s narrative and merges with the protagonist, making it impossible to distinguish between them. Within this fusion, two other voices emerge from the heart of the story. Together, the three take us on a journey deep into Layla’s soul, where “thorns grow beneath her skin”. They invite the audience to join Layla in her isolation, confusion, hesitation, contradictions–the oscillation between ebbs and flows.

The performance asks: how can we escape the whirlpool of depression? How can stories serve as a lifeline? This work was built collaboratively, with the script developed during rehearsals, focusing on embodying different forms of depression and the inner struggles within the storyteller, who narrates Layla’s tale through shadow play, dance, singing, puppetry, and poetry.

ضَوْء هو عمل مسرحي يروي قصة حكواتية تقص علينا حكاية ليلى حبيسة المكتبة المظلمة، ليلى المختبئة من أشعة الشمس، والتي تروي بدورها الحكايات لجمهورها المكون من الكراسي والطاولات والشبابيك في محاولة منها للنجاة.

تنغمس الحكواتية في سرد قصة ليلى إلى الحد الذي تندمج فيه مع بطلة حكايتها فلا نعود بمقدورنا أن نميز الاثنتين. في خضم هذا الاندماج بين الشخصيتين، يتجسد صوتان آخران وينبثقان من قلب القصة ليصبح ثلاثتهن جسدًا واحدًا. يصحبنا الثلاثة في رحلة إلى أعماق ليلى حيث “ينبت الشوك من تحت جلدها”. ثم يدعون إلى المشاهد ليشارك ليلى وحدتها، وحيرتها، وترددها، وتناقضاتها وتيهها بين مد وجزر.

 يطرح العمل سؤالًا مركزيًا وهو كيف لنا أن ننجو من دوامة الاكتئاب؟ وكيف للحكايات أن تكون طوق نجاة؟ ابتكرنا هذا العمل بشكل تشاركي حيث كتبنا النص خلال التدريبات وركزنا أيضًا على تجسيد أشكال الاكتئاب المختلفة وطوايا النفس المتصارعة داخل الحكواتية التي تقص علينا حكاية ليلى من خلال خيال الظل والرقص والغناء والعرائس والشعر.
